Sprint Racing Canoes – C15 and C4

Our beautifully finshed wooden C4 and C15 racing canoes are fast and famous. Clubs across North America rely on our boat for their fine finish, performance and durability. We know that boats in your club have to survive in order to finish the race, so Ted builds them with his well proven construction process. Call us today to reserve a construction spot.

We have recently redesigned our famous C15 racing canoe, adding small but noticeable improvements towards the perfect balance of tracking, speed and versatility. The underwater profile of the boat (the rocker) has been altered to reduce the tendency of the bow to oversteer, while the aft has a weathervane effect. Underwater sections of the boat have been rounded to reduce frictional drag, especially at lower speeds. For stronger paddlers, the top-end speed has been extended by reducing the tendency of the stern to squat. Whether the crew is light or heavy, focuses on technique or strength, they will find the new C15 design sleek, superior, and inspiring.

Built to Win!

The Cheema Aquatic Club in Nova Scotia, paddle a Bear Mountain built war canoe  and won the National Sprint Racing Championships. This win sent the team – and the canoe – to demo the sport at the 2012 Olympics in London last August. He is an interview with the team about their accomplishment:

  Why Bear Mountain Boats?

  • National C4 & C15 Sprint Racing Canoes
  • Low maintenance cedar strip/epoxy construction
  • We also do major repairs to all wood sprint racing boats
  • Specializing in Racing Canoe restoration and repair

C15 Sprint Racing CanoeWe have been building competitive, easy to maintain sprint racing canoes since 1981.The Primary difference between our boats and the traditional boats is the construction technique we use. Our boats require less maintenance and may be maintained by relatively unskilled volunteers. The hull is a high strength to weight ratio monocoque structure consisting of a western red cedar strip planked hull sheathed inside and out with fibreglass cloth. The fibreglass is impregnated with WEST SYSTEM(R) epoxy resin effectively stabilising the moisture content of the wood. Any future maintenance will be to the final varnish coating rather than to the wood surface. As a finishing touch, vinyl lettering that identifies the sponsor and your club will be applied in your choice of colours. We enjoy building for the clubs and can appreciate the effort that goes into raising money for new boats. With this in mind, we have tried to keep our price as low as possible without sacrificing quality.

New Foot Brace System for Bear Mountain C4 Sprint Racing Canoes

Sprint racing canoes are designed to go fast for short distances on flat water. Sprint racing is the oldest organized sport in Canada and it is interesting to note that in a culture where sports equipment evolves almost daily – no real changes had been made to these canoes in over 60 years. That os until Ted and Steve Killing started thinking about that fact and talking to the coaches.

We are excited about the changes we have implemented to make these hulls more suited to the current paddlers. To get the most out of a stroke the paddlers need to brace themselves in these narrow tippy hulls. In consultation with the paddlers and coaches of the Mississauga and Balmy Beach Canoe clubs Ted has come up with an adjustable knee block and foot brace system. The aluminum footbraces are attached to a sliding track for easy adjustment.
